You are sitting in an interview and feel it is going fantastic. Then, they ask you “what is your weakness?”💣💫
The sweat beads start to form, and you are presented with a dilemma. ⁉️ Do you state a true weakness and risk negating all of the strengths and achievements you have showcased to this point? ⁉️ Do you say, something generic and risk losing their engagement due to a passe answer? ⁉️ Or, do you say you have none and (eek) risk being seen as someone who thinks they are perfect? 🤔
Decisions, right? Here is a bit of insight on this question. 💥💥💥
EASY SOLUTION
I like to call it the “BUT” trick! Human nature is that we tend to forget what was just communicated as soon as someone says the word “BUT”. We emphasize what is said AFTER. So, we can use this little bit of psychology in our favor.
We state a small weakness that may be a small part of the job (but not the main part of the job) or even something we don’t love about ourselves. Then we say the word “BUT”. Finally, we overcome it.
We showcase how we are growing our skills, knowledge, expertise, and fluency in our weaknesses and are committed to professional growth.🌟
For example. They have a software program listed in the job description that you are not 100% familiar with. So, before the interview, take the initiative to research the software program and its basic use of it.
Everything can be found online.
Then you use this as your weakness and overcome it.
☑️ REAL WORLD ANSWER EXAMPLE “I don’t have first-hand experience in XXX software program BUT since I know it is something your department/organization is using and I am committed to becoming an instrumental member of your team, I have already taken the initiative to learn it” (and then talk about what you have learned about it).
